Chapter Six

No sooner had the men quit the room than Willoughby appeared at the doorway.

“Two missives have come for you from London, Lady Archewyne,” the butler announced as he proffered a silver salver to her with twin ivory envelopes lying upon the shiny surface. “The courier hinted that you were most anxious to receive this.”

“Thank you, Willoughby. Does it require a reply?”

“Not that I’m aware of, my lady.” His lined face lit when she smiled at him. “Will there be anything else?”

“At the moment, no.” Emmaline took the envelopes while the older man left the room. It was so darling how much the butlers at both residences were nearly the same person.

“Is everything all right?” Sophia inquired as she flew Charles through the air until he laughed hysterically.

“I cannot imagine why it wouldn’t be.” Emmaline opened the first envelope. As she read the wispy handwriting, she smiled. “How lovely. It is an answer to a question I put forth to an agency in London that supplies tutors and teachers on a wide variety of subjects.”

Surprise lit the other woman’s face. “For Lady Jane?”

“Oh, no.” Emmaline slipped the letter back into its envelope. “I have engaged a governess for the children, and am quite pleased with that effort.” She waved the stationery. “This is for Aadhya. Miles and I have plans for her as well.”

“Are you sending her back to India?”

“Absolutely not.” She opened the second envelope, and her gaze fell on the official seal for the Lord Chancellor of the Court of Chancery. The words on the paper gave her the permission she and Miles had sought. “In fact, we are making the girl our ward, and if she accepts, we shall give her an education and then eventually launch her into society.” Emmaline grinned as excitement wound up her spine. She caught the shock in Sophia’s eyes and sighed. “You wonder why we would do such a thing.”

“I’ll admit, it’s rather unorthodox, especially when I assume she has parents alive and well back home.” The viscountess snuggled Charles to her shoulder, and he was content to remain there. In fact, he drooled on Sophia’s dress.

“No doubt it is in the eyes of proper society. However, I’m a firm believer that those who have the means should take care of those who do not. Also, the world of children in India is complicated at best. And if one has the misfortune of being born a female, she is almost always turned out if not killed, for males are considered more worthy.” She moved toward the door. “I suspect that Aadhya has much to offer the world, and she is naturally intelligent as well as caring. Why should she not have a chance to live her dreams? So, since her parents left her to die or be used within the nawab’s palace, Miles and I are taking matters into our own hands.”

“Jonathan was right. You are quite the force, and you effect massive change when you want to.”

“Just so.” Emmaline couldn’t help her euphoria.
